I thought this image from 1774 was rather funny. The Wiki site where I got it from says it's a caricature of the wild Macaroni fashion of the day which tried to mimic hairstyles of women aristocrats. You can really tell how the old song makes sense now – “Stuck a feather in his hat and called it 'Macaroni'” (or so I'm guessing this is the kind of thing the song refers to). What it says underneath the cartoon could well be applied to about any age:
Our wise Forefathers would expectEven Sensibility in DressThe modern Race delight to ShowWhat Folly in Excess can doThe honest Farmer come to Town,Can scarce believe his Son his own:If thus the Taste continues Here,What will it be another Year?

I always wondered where that reference came from, it never made any sense.

Mind you - I'm guessing about the reference. It seems right....but don't be telling your friends that as fact until you check it out with another source.
Too late, I have already named you as the source. 😀 But it does seem plausable.
