So does anyone here have any formal education in history or make their living (or did) in the field? Any writing credits? Me, it is a hobby. My Grandmother used to tell me stories of our family during the civil war, her grandfather was a seargent in the confederate army. I moved around a lot and was able to see a lot of the history of this country. It just snow balled from there.
Interested in the Old West and Civil War as a kid, Calif. history and WWI and II in HS. Majored in geography (and Earth science… took some anthro. too) in college. My first rifle coach was a Ranger in the Pacific in WWII and current was in Task Force Smith.Came to teaching late... world for 10 of 11 years at a local HS and in 4th year of US at a a MS (1 class of ancient civ too ::)Sort of interesting that I have only 12 or so units of history but have learned more (on my own) and teaching than many of my collegues with majors bought at college.Bernard DeVoto... sez it all for me.Cheers,Wally
If I would get off my procrastinating butt, I would finish my Master's Thesis, and have my MA in History. My BA is in History with a minor in Geography. I have received one research grant from a historical society for $5,000.00. Hopefully down the road, I'll get accepted into a Doctoral program…probably in Colonial U.S. History.
I have no formal history training. I went to an all boys ROTC high school and the cadre of military instructors were almost all WW2 vets with a few that were just being rotated back from the Korean War which was still in progress. I got interested in history from listening to some of their tales. Then a little geneology research found that all four of my G-grandfathers were Confederate soldiers and my GG Grandfather was shot in 1836 by Red Stix warriors in the battle at Itchawaynochaway Creek in Ga. My GGG-grandfather fought with the Swamp Fox in the Revolution. My interests in history are mostly local, American West and general US history.
I currently have a BA in World Military History and I'm working on a MA in History. As far as how do I use it? I'm an amature archeologist and writer (nothing published yet) I'm currently looking for any future dealing with history once I retire from the Air Force. If anyone is wondering, check out http://www.apus.edu great history program there and its all online.
I also have my BA in World Military History and am working on my MA in European History. I plan on teaching a little and doing some outside consulting for tour operators in Europe after I retire from the Army in a few years. I would also like to pursue a Phd but am not completely wedded to the idea, I guess it depends on how much I achieve with an MA and whether I think it is worth investing the time, I dont think that having a string of letters after your name makes you any smarter than anybody else.
