He said, “War is Hell”, my father side live in Georgia Davisboro, He did what he saw and knew had to be done, He helped end a war that was a lost cause from Day one. If the south had won or became a seperate part of US or country. We may have never been the strong country we now are.The War was our out pouring of Passion, not logic. Cry for all thoes that went to war re.joyce it is over and we now can learn from it. General Sherman was a hero and I think some may have carried out the mission with to much zeal. But some used there brains and saved Food and Survived to tell the story to a younger generation.
I won't go as far as calling Sherman a “hero” but he did what he had to do to expedite the end of the war. He wasn't a war criminal either. Just a guy who knew what had to be done and was willing to be the one to do it.
Today we can armchair our quarter-back, then was a different time, people thought different, Sherman new not only he had to deny the enemy food, supplies, cause confuession, But make sure jonny-reb had to worry. He had to fight and stay alive, also how could he protect family and love ones? Most confederates must have worried thoughts like this all the time. I was one thing to fight for 3 mos. it another to stuck in battlenoing if try to leave you be shot if caught. Grants terms show how he new southerners would have to be survive to rebuild.
