ParticipantComparing events or other things and what-ifs in history is fun to a point, but I think when you start looking at individuals, we should be cautious of any comparisons. Augustus was one of the greatest leaders of Western Civilization. But would we want him as President?
If we're talking about post nuclear war where zombies are roaming everywhere, yeah I would take Augustus.

ParticipantMadison's War was only important in the fact that it gave rise to Andrew Jackson.

ParticipantLincoln didn't need a teleprompter to get his message out clearly. He was a very clever and charismatic persona. However, by today's standards, he doesn't look the part. Lincoln was tall, lanky, and ugly in appearance. Americans nowadays tend to elect good looking candidates. A big reason for this is because of the women voters. They just won't vote in an ugly man unless he's super qualified and known for his integrity as a leader, husband, and father. Mitt Romney is probably the best looking GOP candidate in terms of appearance and as a father/husband. I'm sure this secured many women voters and that's why he is going to be the nominee. Lincoln's other handicap was his wife. The national media would have had a field day with her especially once it was widely known she was mentally/emotionally unstable.

ParticipantI think it would be cool to visit the Motherland, but with London gearing up for the Olympics, this year would not be a good time.

ParticipantI always find these “discoveries” to be dubious. Seems like one comes out every six months or so.

ParticipantThey haven't failed, they are doing it on purpose. They hate capitalism and want to usher in a socialist utopia.

ParticipantI say let Europe rot in their debt and America too. It's the only way to get things straightened out. You can't build a new building until you tear down the old foundation. It's painful, but necessary.

ParticipantI tried to read The Stand and read about 300 pages before I tossed it. At that point my patience was completely spent.

ParticipantThis sort of thing goes back to Vietnam. I think we need to figure out a way to get out of the Middle East without throwing Israel under the bus. Even when we are trying to do good over there we end up in some controversy with the local populace. Kharzai has already turned on us and Pakistan basically has turned their backs on us too. We're in a no win situation because our supposed allies don't even trust us anymore.

ParticipantI have to agree with Vulture on this. The resources were there, but the experience and logistical planning was not. The Allies just were not competent enough at major beach head invasions in 1943. Also, in 1943, the Allies still believed the best route to Germany was through the “soft underbelly.” Their logic was fairly sound, but it didn't pan out the way they had hoped. Meanwhile, Stalin begins to think his Allies are being deliberately incompetent so that Russia would bear the brunt of the war and exhaust Germany for them. If I were Stalin, I probably would have felt the same way.

ParticipantAll good ideas... acting together can only help everyone involved. The problems with my main site is that it is very niche... strictly Missouri and Kansas in the Civil War... Very specific traffic... not sure it would help the readership at other sites. It might. Maybe if for nothing else than visibility...I also have started a new site called "Historical Christian" and have a pastor friend of mine who teaches, get this, Greek, and is about done with is doctorate in theology. We both love history as well as the historical aspects of Christianity... so that site might tie in with some of the others here...There needs to be a post here with URLs, descriptions, etc so that they can be added to everyone's site.
Oh I would love to have your pastor friend take over Tribulation Project if he were willing to.
