ParticipantGents, I apologize that I have been absent for an extended period - business has been crazy, but I will try to be a more regular contributor in the near future. I feel like I've missed a lot, and then, I feel like nothing has changed...
I've been guilty myself. I've started a bunch of websites and got myself overextended. This site has always been one of my favorites. I'll be contributing more again as well.

ParticipantWow, I don't even put an office phone number on my syllabus. I do, however, usually respond to student emails relatively quickly, sometimes even late at night (I'm usually up anyway). I am not sure how much I would want to give out my personal phone number to students. My officemate once received an anonymous email from a disgruntled student who dropped the f-bomb and totally insulted him in the letter. It would be even worse if an angry student were to decide to use my phone number for nefarious purposes. ???
That's part of the job. You are eventually going to get into it with a student so you might as well get prepared for it.

ParticipantOne thing I don't want to become is a technofreak. I now have unlimited text messaging, whereas in the past I had to pay $.20 per message. I can now use things such as Foursquare which were only a curiosity up until now. Anyway, this past spring semester I had a few students in my class who would constantly be typing away on their phones. I don't really mind it if someone sends a text message or something on occasion, but the habitual user starts to annoy me. I could have said something, or kicked the offending students out of class, but I chose to ignore it instead. Technology is great, but it has turned us into a short attention span culture.
You need to make yourself as accessible to your students as possible so use that phone for texting and if you have the capability, file transfers for papers.

ParticipantI assume it can accept travel and jump drives for file transfers right?

ParticipantJust purchased one on Ebay a few minutes ago. I'll be asking questions on how best to use it once I get started with it. Scout it will never replace the real thing, but it will be nice when you're on the go and don't want a back pack fulll of books weighing you down.

ParticipantI need to get back to school and finish my BA. I needed a break and it's now ended being more than a year. Also kind of ran out of money (I'm NOT getting a student loan), but it's also stupid to pay what I already did for 1/2 a BA. That would be a waste. At least I'm reading a lot more than I ever have, but it's not the same as taking a class.PLus if I ever finish my BA, I could go to grad school and study and concentrate on something I really want to like British or Greek history.
Damn I didn't realize you were not in school anymore. I've been out since 2006, but I'm getting things in order to return.

ParticipantEvery time I think of Historiography I picture some dusty guy in an equally dusty library comparing two texts by different authors and complaining about the writing style and thought processes of one while liking the other.
This about sums it all up.
