ParticipantSoutherners were not evil for owning slaves. Northerners were not evil for rampaging through Georgia. War is what is evil.

ParticipantRight now there's a minimum age of 16 to get one's driver's license in the U.S., and no maximum age (to my knowledge). Do you think there should be a different minimum limit, or even a maximum limit?
There probably should be a maximum range where drivers must retest to show motor skills, but I cringe at the prospect at the same time. Not an easy thing to discuss.

ParticipantMy problem is that my time needed to get a paper done is usually related to the amount of time I am given to complete it. In other words, if I am given two weeks to complete a paper, it will take me two weeks. If given two months, it will take me two months. I think it's a psychological thing. When I am given more time, I will spend that time on tangents in my research, such as following leads which might turn into dead ends. I will also deliberate on questions like, "should include this or that?" rather than just doing it. While it is true that I do better overall research when I am given more time, it doesn't really mean I will get it done before the deadline.
A two month paper should take two months; a two week paper should take two weeks. Use the time allotted to your advantage.

ParticipantNerd! Nerd! Nerd! Bwhahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!! 🙂
Well, it will all turn into a big fine if I don't return some of them pretty soon. I have heard over library fines exceeding $1000 in extreme cases.... 😮Incidentally, I just finished two days of working, each over the course of 12 hours, trying to finish my second draft. As usual, I overestimate my ability to get a paper done in a decent time. :-[
It's best to start early, write a draft, let it sit a few days, go back to it, and then mark it up for a rewrite. I find this really helps.

ParticipantThey became allies during Solomon's reign. Solomon and the Queen of Sheba were very close friends (some have suggested they were even lovers). Solomon wielded strong influence in the region because of the work his father did in solidifying the kingdom through war.
Yeah they did, but not in this particular case. Remember that the Israelites were still the new kids on the block and so were aspiring to be like the more established nations around them, so in a sense, they were the bottom of the barrel. So in other words, they did not have racial hang ups in those days?

ParticipantAetheling is correct here Phid. There was a overt campaign to kill buffaloes to squeeze out the Plains Indians so that Westward expansion could continue unabated. This isn't revisionist history or anything; it's the truth. It all began with Andrew Jackson and each subsequent administration continued the policies wherever the railroad companies wanted to go.
Before your post I was thinking that the quote Aetheling provided was quite good and really does support his point quite well. I still think that the commercial use of buffalo hides was probably a more significant driver, even though the forced migration of the Plains Indians was also a driver. I'm saying this simply because I think that economics is highly influential on history in general, and more specifically because the drastic reduction of buffalo by 30 million - such a complete wiping out of the herd/supply - highly suggests market forces at play.
Well in every way except that true market forces would have sought to keep the buffalo trade going to perpetuate the profits rather than let the supply dwindle (of course the more rare a buffalo hide became, the more expensive it got). Still, I would imagine many of the buffalo carcasses remained unharvested.

ParticipantThe only thing I have a problem with is the Southerners were a little hypocritical because they were so instrumental in the formation of the union (Jefferson, Madison, Gerry, and later Calhoun et al), yet they were so quick to abandon it when things didn't go their way. And this is despite the best efforts of Henry Clay to appease them on several occasions.
DonaldBaker
ParticipantQuite simply hold on and survive. The South never thought it could militarily defeat the North. Southerners hoped that the North would tire of the war and give up.

ParticipantAnother great pic from Aeth. LOL Where do you find these gems? 🙂
