ParticipantThe South had its cotton, and the cotton crops needed slave labor to continue. Rather than give up the labor, the South decided to wage war. I'm wondering - could the South have given up slavery to avoid war? For example, could the South have emancipated the slaves voluntarily and kept them on as wage earners? Although they would have taken a financial hit, it would not have been so bad as what ultimately happened.Naturally, we have to set aside the issue of states' rights to consider this question.
Yes the South could have avoided war. Congress would have phased slavery out incrementally over time rather than all at once. The Planter Class (Gentry) was a minority in Southern demographics, it would not have affected that many Southerners economically besides them. Of course, the Fire Eaters made it all but impossible to compromise after Lincoln took office.

ParticipantHave you seen what DARPA is trying to make with robots just for this purpose? Four-legged robotic dogs are being developed as pack units.

ParticipantWe think it has to do with IP ranges that are very close or within the range listed on the ban list here. If someone does not have a static IP, it may change from time to time and fall within that range. When this happens, the software simply thinks you are a spammer and redirects you to wherever Phid specifies.

ParticipantWCF has a long history (well if five years is long) of not having any trolls or annoying members save the aforementioned Mr. Farts aka Holy Roller aka Grey Mouser and so on. He was someone who followed me from my other boards so I am to blame for him. Outside of him, the anomaly that he was, we've been troll free. I don't think this board will ever attract any serious trolls. WCF just isn't setup for them.

ParticipantGrant's accomplishments are greater than those of Regan. It's far more likely that communism would have imploded without Regan than the North would have won the Civil War--preserving the Union--without Grant.Grant doesn't merit having his portrait on the $50.00 bill for the the accomplishments of his presidency, but he does for his role as a general in the Civil War. One need not have been president to merit having his portrait on US currency, as witness Franklin and Hamilton.
yeah and HAD Joseph E Johnston NOT been a wimp and had came from Jackson, MS, and trapped him between Pembertion and himself the war might have swong in a differnet way ahd if he lived he would have been a HUGE discrase so he does not realy need it. And the last time i check Nancy regan did not own slaves while Mrs. Grant did, and Ron did not let Willam T. Sherman RAPE AND PILLAGE the south, OH and Ron was NOT a racist
Johnston could not help Pemberton. Why you ask? Because Pemberton would have gotten in his way. 🙂

ParticipantSaw this quote in the comments section of a satire piece about Ron Paul today and immediately thought of this thread.
Ron Paul?s unilaterally disarming, blame-America-first views on national security and foreign affairs would spell the end of America as a world power, which is why anti-American leftists like ?Oscar Le Grouche? are rooting for him for all they?re worth. And also which is why the Republican Party must reject him like an invading virus.
Ironically this poster's summation is exactly why I dislike Ron Paul. I agree with him on many issues but national security is a show-stopper for me. We live in a dangerous world and unilateral disarmament will not make it safer.
Who is more dangerous than the United States? We are so far beyond any other nation militarily it isn't even funny. Russia and China fear us enough that they have joined forces as a counterbalance to our global power. Just because we are theoretically a benign country, doesn't mean we always will be...and we do spread our weight around the world like it was nobody's business right now. How long can we afford to be the world's policeman? Ron Paul's concerns are the costs of empire, and that can be a national security issue too.

ParticipantMy first post having joined a short time ago.I like Machaivelli's realism. Interesting, the Folio Society edition of The Prince has an introduction by Benito Mussolini.
I like your website Don. I might "steal" some of your web graphic themes for my sites. (Not your actual graphics mind you, but something similar I will make on my own). 🙂 Oh by the way, welcome to WCF!

ParticipantHas anyone read Pat Buchanan's book, Churchill, Hitler, and "The Unnecessary War"? I consider Buchanan to be the most historically-intelligent of any modern-day politician.
Newt Gingrich is way beyond Pat, but Pat is pretty decent in his own right.

ParticipantI love Ancient History, but I also love American, and I have to because that's my area now. I wish I could become more interested in South American/Andean History and Chinese, but it's just not the same for some reason.

ParticipantA History major, I was a Social Studies Dept. Chair at a high school in Los Angeles for 15 years. The great problem for students at the grade school level is this: All teachers of History must be credentialed as Social Studies majors or minor. Very few are History majors and types who read history books in their spare time. The worst thing a teacher could say to me when they were new or we received a new textbook was, "Do you have a teacher's manual for me?" One teacher, a coach too, and popular, after more than 20 years of teaching U.S. History expressed surprise that the French were there at Yorktown. He gave U's to several students who challended him when he said that Queen Victoria was a perfect example of an absolut monarch.
I like your style. 🙂
