The eldest of the Kennedy brothers(Jack, Bobby and Teddy) was named Joesph(Joe). He was piloting an old wornout bomber that was loaded with explosives. It was rigged to be flown by radio control from another following plane. Joe and the co-pilot were supposed to jump before they left Allied territory. The plane would then have been guided onto a target by the following plane. Something went wrong and the plane exploded in mid-air before they could jump.
Johnson's Island was used primarily as a prison for officers. After getting stuck in the escape tunnel my G-grandfather was very unpopular with the other prisoners. The ones behind him could not escape and the ones who had made it thru the tunnel were captured when the guards found him stuck in the hole with nothing but his head poked out.
PhidI can't identify any of the objects. If you will refer to a post I made Nov.1 2006 "The History Channel" there is a story about my G-grandfather trying to escape from Johnson's Island.Actually, until late in the war, the inmates were treated much better there than other prisons. Later on conditions got pretty bad. There also was a conspiracy to seize a passenger boat ,the Philo Parsons, and free the prisoners and escape to Canada. A Confederate spy ,Charles H. Cole, posing as a banker was to hold a party aboard the Union gunboat , the Michigan, guarding the prison . He planned to drug the officers and take over the gunboat then join the passenger ship to effect the escape. He was discovered and the gunboat was never taken
The series was about a group of civilian women from Singapore. They were British,Dutch and Austrailians. One was a British Doctor some were aristocrat types and others were soldiers wives.here is a site about the series:http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/news/cult/2004/09/20/14329.shtml
Jack Ruby had friends in the Police Dept. which allowed him access to the area. He probably thought that public opinion would get him off. If Oswald was dead he couldn't provide info on any others who might have been involved. I doubt that the truth will ever be known about whether it was a conspiracy or the act of one lone gunman who shot JFK
I read mostly non-fiction history and biographies. Am currently reading “Portals To Hell” by Lonnie R. Speer about the horrid conditions of all the Civil War prisons.I also learn a lot from this forum Thanks fellows !!!!!!
And I think it only fair to have an Irish History month, a Scottish History month, An Asian History month,An English history month, a Polish History month, a Scandinavian History month , a Hispanic History month etc ad nauseaum
I just watched a History Channel episode about a WW1 German Raider that was sunk in the harbor at Guam. They stated that the first shot fired by an American in WW1 was by a US Marine . He fired a warning shot across the bow of a German supply boat when war was declared.
Atlanta DOES NOT count ! Please don't judge the rest of us by Atlanta. I will drive 100 miles to avoid Atlanta. It is inhabited by rude people who are totally different from the rest of the state.
I read a book last year called The Sentinal(sp). It was a farfetched conspiracy theory that several generations of Confederate descendents had hidden gold to finance the South rising again. Interesting book but hard to believe
If I remember correctly the State of Georgia once went all the way to the Missisippi River before Alabama and Missisippi were formed( Yazoo Territory ?)It strikes me as strange that the states who tried to secede from the Union were not allowed to do so but West Virginia did essentially the same thing by seceding from Virginia.I guess the victors write the laws and the history books.
