I remember it vividly. I was in the US Army stationed at Camp Red Cloud in South Korea. I was hanging out at the NCO club getting ready to have some lunch and was sitting in there watching the launch and then when it exploded I remember clearly thinking “that was NOT supposed to happen… this is not good”.Obviously we know the rest... it was pretty horrific and the knowledge that a civilian was on the flight made it even more surreal.
But again, you are talking about a captain who, while focusing on the Engineer portion, is also a captain and should understand leadership, strategy and tactics. So… those studies should have been in his learning plan.However... it all boils back to going beyond what is necessary. I am not advocating history majors taking no math, they should take it, but should they be required to take classes that go beyond the required fundamentals? Even in, let's say, a business aspect of history - balancing books, crunching numbers, etc. - again, is an advanced math class really necessary for even that? So, a history major takes all the required, liberal arts classes on the fundamental level to make them "well rounded"... at that point they have leveled the playing field and IMHO should now focus on the historical aspects OR whatever other classes are relavent to their future degree/career plan.I see where you are coming from, but I think we have people getting degrees who are informed about a lot and masters of a little.Again, my two cents...
I want the explanation again on how having a plethora of math classes aids, in any way, a history major?Doesn't college level algebra cover the ingredients a person needs in every day life? Do I really need to know higher level math to balance my checkbook, figure out my 401K, and prepare my budget? I don't think so.So getting to the "well rounded" part, I took college algebra, I have the math portion covered, I have my sciences covered, literature, etc, do I REALLY need a bunch of classes in areas that have absolutely no bearing on my major and my focus? My declared major is History... not General Education, Accounting, Science, etc etc... it's Hisotry, and I think that should be the main focus... I'll get my "well rounded" education just as well as the next guy but will come out more prepared for my future in the History world focusing on that aspect.Just my two cents
But war is not “gentlemanly”. Oh, it USED to be, and that is how the South believed it should be fought. War is war, and it is ugly, horrible and many people suffer and die, civilian and soldiers alike. The South wanted a "clean" war... the politicians today want a "clean" war... HOWEVER, the Taliban, terrorists, and the like understand war much better than we do, at least in the sense of what it takes to win. Total war, make it ugly, and make the otherside want to quit. Our soldiers have the know-how, the equipment, the training and the fact that they are Americans on their side. What they don't have is the ability to fully use their skills. They are being forced to fight in a "gentlemanly Way" when the enemy could care less about that. They want to win. Period. No different than in 1864-65. Substitute the South with today's American public/government viewpoint of war, and the North with Sherman. We already know the outcome in 1865.Sherman was a soldier, a leader and a visionary. I again believe we need leaders like him now.
I am a huge Sherman supporter. I have read multiple volumes about him, good and bad, but when the rubber meets the road Sherman as stated knew that the war wasn't going to be pretty, it wasn't going to be quick and he knew exactly what needed to be done to win with the least amount of casualties.Sherman wanted as little loss of life, on both sides, as possible. This is why he chose the scorched earth policy. It was a economic attack. The results of whcih caused strife in the people, which in turn caused desertion in Confederate ranks, laid waste to supplies and support for the Confederates, and brought the south to it's knees and seriously dropped the moral of the Confederate soldiers. Most of all, it saved the lives of his men AND the rebels by not engaging each other in actual combat. He believed that war should be ugly, it should be painful and it should yank at every emothion one can think of. As he said, the crueler it is, the sooner it is over. He said in response to those screaming at his actions that it was war, no popularity seeking. Sherman wanted the war over. He called the glory that was felt from it "moonshine". It was intoxicating to those who did not know combat. He wanted to "sober them up" with his actions. What I like best about Sherman was it was never about him. He was not a glory hound. He was just efficient and was tired of war. He knew exactly how to end the war and stood by his convictions. We would be wise to model that strategy today. Our enemy knows this theory of "total war" all too well and employ it. We have the best Army in the world, but our politicians and policies are preventing them from doing what they do best. Make war ugly. Make the enemy want it to end. Until that happens, it will continue.
“To sustain the belief that there is no God, atheism has to demonstrate infinite knowledge, which is tantamount to saying, “I have infinite knowledge that there is no being in existence with infinite knowledge.”"It is a mindless philosophy that assumes that one's private beliefs have nothing to do with public office. Does it make sense to entrust those who are immoral in private with the power to determine the nation's moral issues and, indeed, its destiny? The duplicitous soul of a leader can only make a nation more sophisticated in evil." -- Ravi ZachariasMorality cannot exist outside of God... there is no basis for it right and wrong without a Creator. So what happens is the country falls apart when it's leaders support or even condone that which is immoral. This is why there is such a rub between the left and the right. Dark and light cannot coexist. Now, I'm not saying which is which, because there is dark at both ends of the spectrum, but when you take morality out of the confines of what it was always intended (God) then the result is that the absent of any moral standard results in the duplicitous soul that Dr Zacharias mentions, ergo, a corrupt society.
I saw it… agreed… some hisotrical liberties, but nothing too far fetched. I thought Tom Cruise did an OK job in the role, not sure who would have portrayed the role better, but I came away at least not feeling like I was ripped off… say with something like “The Red Baron”…
I would disagree with the following:1. The South seceded over states' rights.2. Secession was about tariffs and taxes.3. Most white Southerners didn't own slaves, so they wouldn't secede for slavery.Let me gather my thoughts and I will expound....
What purpose would that serve? I don't think Booth had that much clout and his conspirators were not all the sharpests tools in the shed, so do we really think they could pull that off?Again, you have to wonder to what would be gained by faking his death, letting him go, whatever.I think scout nails it... he was recognizable, lingered a bit after being shot, and would have easily been identified. Nah, JWB died that day in April 1865.

#1 – Cell phone… Seriously, when I was a kid the idea of a cell phone was something Captain Kirk used on Star Trek. Now, even kids have them and I even feel out of sorts if I leave mine at home.#2 Wireless internet. Between phones with it or laptops and netbooks, the ability to be online anywhere and everywhere is astounding.
No matter how often I tell myself that I want to start early on my papers each semester, it always seems like I'm working on them until the very end. 😮
That is me... I actually had all my resources ready to go in preparation for my paper a couple weeks prior to the class even starting, and I still didn't get it done until just about the last minute...So much for teaching an old dog new tricks! ;D
Finished my Western Civ II paper on V.I. Lenin last week and my last paper for American National Government on various issues of the Obama Presidency. Final in ANG next week and this term is finished! About a month hiatus and then back to it!
