Cotton was king back then and southerners were the rich “elite”…Hard to think that way with today's mindset... I would bet your average person would have said Boston, Philadelphia or New York
What a load of nonsense… Putting him at #1 totally makes that list not even palatable with a shaker of salt and some desert.Put this same list out 4 years ago and GW would be #1, 10 years prior, Bill Clinton...
I think that had the South attempted a judicial approach it would have negated their stance. By taking it to the judicial they are saying that the Union has to grant them permission to seceed. That was the main tenant of the South's stance, that they were not required to ask for permission.I agree with Mr. Debs, it would have never passed the Supreme Court. And regardless of many of their southern leanings I do not see ho granting secession to the southern states would have benefitted the Supreme Court. Granting secession is paramount to them really having little power, and that is one thing the SCotUS was all about: their power. John Marshall set the standard with judicial Review basically saying "The law is what the judges say it is." Granting secession limits their power and they WERE power and were not about to give it up.
Joplin is about 3 hours from me… tornados ripped through here yesterday again…Had one touch down 5 miles fromt he bas where I work which happens to be a mile or so from my house. We are putting together a benefit concert on June 3rd for the relief efforts. My pastor has been down twice assigned to work in the morgue.I am seriously tempted to move to like North Dakota where you never hear of anything other than cold. I have lived in the midwest the majority of my life and been through quite a few tornados. They never get easier and you never really get used to them when they do hit. Keep the people of this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers.
I say it doesn't matter. If anyone has a problem with killing OBL, let em take it up with SEAL T6.We need to quit worrying about what others think about us when it gets down to matters of national security. OBL targeted the US, made no bones about it. That is a direct threat to our nation. He is now fish food, as it should be.I never thought I would hear these words come out of my mouth, but Obama was spot on in authorizing the hit.

I say embrace technology. Nothing wrong with understanding how to do it the “original” way, but I agree, everything is digitized. No more typewriters and at least from what I have seen, no professor wants handwritten papers, so the computer is the default standard and I know my main history instructor makes it a point to not only teach history, but to teach the proper use of technology for college level learning and for future history majors.
While I don't see ANY contenders in the GOP or Independents to challenge Obama (how sad is that…horrible 4 years and probably will get elected again), Ron Paul is just too much of a loose cannon to be taken seriously. The idea of him in office is about as scary as Obama getting a second term (OK, maybe not that much)…
I get stuck… I like reading about other periods, but always ultimately put that reading down to focus on the plethora of reading material on the Civil War. Maybe one day I'll get past this đŸ™‚
You also have to remember that nearly (but not all) the battles were fought on southern soil. I would say that tends to make remembering more significant.
To an extent, but then why is WWII so well remembered. It was not nearly as cataclysmic in terms of lives lost as the Civil War yet it is still remembered.
If you only count soldiers. Add in the holocaust victims and you get a pretty significant number and a human horror story that also leaves a pretty lasting image for generations.

One of my friends posted this on Facebook… crazy… I think you are spot on though about the TSA guys worried they will get called to the carpet for not following the rules to the letter…
Bad historical research… Publicity stunt for sure…1. Crucifixions were pretty common. And while most were not nailed I would be willing to bet some nails were used. So what makes these Jesus' nails?2. Why would Caiaphas have nails in his tomb? He was a Jew and most certainly never believed in Christ as God. They can't even be sure this was his tomb.3. Just because the only crucifixion in historical documents in which Caiaphas is mentioned is with Jesus, the guy says "put two and two together" and it has to be Jesus' nails? That couldn't be flimsier.Add this one to the Noah's Ark, Ark of the Covenant, Holy Grail, yadda, yadda, yadda....
I think you are right about the blonde woman… she looks familiar to me as well and something about her doesn't look right… Any commander that would send one of their soldiers out without proper safety in mind, is in neglect. And like the article syas, wearing it with BDU's goes agains a whole ot of different Army Reg's that are in place for very specific reasons.I think the picture is bogus, but I think the PC world is indeed creeping into our military and is going to be a problem.
