I agree with you about the separation between “Islamists” and non-extremist Muslims. Maybe I'm just missing it, but I don't hear much of any push-back by any so-called mainstream Muslim groups when people kill in the name is Islam. Heck, there's an entire militarized group marching through Iraq at the moment which has the name “Islam” in its title….you'd think that there would be at least some Muslims standing up and definitively denouncing ISIS as false Muslims. I have to think that there's a conscious effort to ignore this issue on the part of the media. In America, how often have we seen the media try to infer racism in the Tea Party with the slightest of threads? And yet it seems like when groups massacre people in malls or in hotels, when they force people to recite verses from the Koran, when they force people to convert, that the media reports it and then moves on. I don't think that society needs to stand up and condemn Islam for the actions of its adherents, but society does need to tell Muslims to condemn the actions of their fellow believers.
Well for that one suspect – Dr. Thomas Neill Cream – the article I linked to said he proclaimed “I am Jack the…” right before he was hanged. Not an airtight confession, but if he was not the murderer it at least tells us that others were trying to take credit for Jack the Ripper's actions. With that in mind, for a written confession to be convincing it would have to be extensive and provide information not made publicly available at the time. I am interested in reading more about the DNA evidence, though, as this could potentially provide enough evidence to make a solid conclusion.
I think this is one of those cases which will likely never be solved definitively since other groupies will always have their own theories. With that said, in my mind this latest claim could hold water, assuming the methods used were legitimate. Here is an article about some of the other suspects in this case (NB: I never knew that Lewis Caroll (of Alice in Wonderland fame) was suspected to be Jack!):http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/shortcuts/2014/sep/08/jack-the-ripper-five-unlikely-suspects-other-than-aaron-kosminski
I am in the middle of watching this miniseries on Amazon Prime (yes, I'm about six years late to the game). It's an excellent series, and just about any fan of American history would enjoy watching it. I am impressed by the level of dialogue in it.
How about “bad history that is being taught now”? I have been debating with people about the presence of black characters in sixteenth-century movies/TV shows. I do not deny the presence of Africans in England in the sixteenth century (there is even evidence that one was in the court of Queen Elizabeth I), but I don't buy the view that if blacks are not shown in those movies that they are either “factually incorrect” or even “racist”.
Beer for the winner? Ha, I suppose, but the real question is “who's buying?”Ok, I changed my name in the league to Cato the Elder - an enemy of Scipio.
Scout, glad to see you joined the college football pickem once again. Watch out for the team named “Scipio Africanus”. I may have to rename my team to for historical effect. At what date do scholars put the land bridge over the Bering Strait? 9000-10000 B.C.? If so, that would have given them a few thousand years to migrate far south.
Here would be my current selection of best sci-fi TV shows:1. Star Trek TNG2. Falling Skies3. Lost4. Dr. Who (original series)5. Star Trek TOS6. Alphas7. Stargate: Atlantis8. V (1984)9. Outer Limits (remake)10. Smallville
Yesterday I completed watching the last season of Battlestar Galactica, which ran from about 2004-2008/9. I would put this at #2 or #3 in my list. I never got into that show while it was airing, even though I was aware it was on the air. It's the kind of show that you can't really start watching halfway through; otherwise, things don't make sense. You need to watch it from the beginning. That is the nice thing about watching streaming TV (such as Amazon Prime or Netflix) - TV seasons are much more pleasant to watch.
Ooh! Thinking of moving out of the ol' 02907? You can check out some of the stats here, and compare with your own area if you want:http://www.zipskinny.com/index.php?zip=37219&pagetype=mainLooks like 75% of the households make between $15-$50k, so cost of living isn't likely to be too bad.
I suppose there is an argument to letting the Post Office use market forces to help itself out, particularly since it can't seem to remain in the black as it is. Still, the purists out there do have a point about the “prostitutionizing” of stamps.
“Eight for a fool”…? I have heard some varying reports about how much sleep one should get, and they seem partially contradictory. I suppose the true answer is that the magic sleep number differs from person to person. The way I determine my sleep time is by how tired I feel based on the number of hours I have been getting at night. I prefer eight, but I can actually do seven to eight and probably feel alright.
