Alright, so I was reading through this list of facts about the Civil War and came to #78:

The South expected to win because 1) Northerners did not know their way around the South, where most of the fighting would take place, 2) Southern farmers were already skilled marksmen and riding horses, and 3) they were fighting to save a way of life.b

Tasty?  Oh, how you're mistaken if you think that is in order for a U.S. beer.  Maybe it should be PBR for you!Ok, ok, we'll spare you on that account.  I can think of some decent U.S. beers but am not sure they'd be available in your neck of the woods.

That is pretty neat.  Maps are awesome. Incidentally, the map #4 predated the birth of the Belgian Congo?

Funny….I wrote “Department of Injustice” in the title at first before I changed it.  I remember how many people unloaded on John Ashcroft and Albert Gonzalez when they served as AG for Bush, but I don't really hear many grievances voiced in the media about Eric Holder.  Bill O'Reilly at least has been chronicling Holder's actions and had a good piece on it yesterday.I get the feeling that Obama believes that the ends justifies the means when it comes to politics.  It's sad, really.

I don't know.  I could not watch the game because I was at work.  Most of the Germans I talk to hoped for a tie, which would guarantee both would advance.  I wanted the US to win just for the bragging rights.  I guess that is out of the window now though.

They hoped for a “tie”???  Did they think they'd hurt Obama's feelings if Germany won?  Yikes.

So it's gonna be Belgium-Usa. No need to ask which team you will support. Good luck.  8)

Alright, since this may be the one time in the near future that the U.S. will be clashing against Belgium on the world stage, I say we do a wager.  If the U.S. wins, Aeth has to drink a U.S. beer (or equivalent drink), and if Belgium wins, I/anyone else participating must drink a Belgian beer.  Photo proof (of the can/bottle) should be posted as verification.  Takers?JC-goalie.gif

Then perhaps you read the adolescent fictional book Leviathan by Westerfeld…

Well, the biggest U.S. soccer game in recent memory is about to begin.  A lot of buzz going on around here because of it.  How's it being presented in Germany?  Is it just “another game” that the Germans are expecting to cruise through?

Isn't that called something like a “craw boil”….something like that?  I vaguely remember it from my days in Texas.

You're right but not just about few matches:  The next world cup will be held in Russia, then in 2022, in Qatar… Qatar where players might have to play during the night … because of climate details during summer!http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/13601803http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2415974/FIFA-President-Sepp-Blatter-admits-Qatar-2022-World-Cup-mistake.html

I had heard that they were on the verge of withdrawing the Qatar World Cup and awarding it to the United States….I wonder if this is still going to happen.

The more I watch soccer the more I am convinced that many, if not most, games are fixed.  Too often it happens that the “favorite” is pulled out at the last minute by a foul that the Ref just does not call or they let the game continue even after regulation and extra time has elapsed.

Conspiracy theories abound, but I don't think World Cup games are among them.  In terms of sports, the refs in soccer don't play as great a role as they do in some other sports, such as football, baseball, or probably basketball.  They announced the 5 minutes of stoppage time in advance yesterday, so the U.S. knew how much time they needed to burn.  The U.S. should never have let Portugal advance down the field like they did yesterday.  I blame the U.S. team for not finishing it like they should have.

BTW, nobody noticed the stunning and overwhelming victory against Russia. They are unstoppable  8)

I believe Russia was the betmakers' favorite, so congrats on the upset.  That could not have made Putin happy, though.

What a heart-breaking game for Team USA.  How in the world could we tie in the 94th minute?

England is out!  Ha Ha 😀

All they needed was for Italy to pull off the simple win against underdog Costa Rica, and they failed.  I wonder what the British were thinking about the Italians after that.

There was a fort in my home state that was manned I believe around that time, but I thought the main reason was for protection against Indians.
