I vaguely remember hearing about the spikes in logs. Pretty terrible. But it's an example of people viewing something in absolutes where it ought not be viewed. Nowadays it seems like fires decimate forests in the west, fires which could have been prevented from spreading by cutting some of these trees down. I thought I had heard that it was environmentalists who opposed this chopping. In the end everyone loses out.

Actually I don't think that conservatism at its heart opposes responsible treatment of the environment. The opposing side might have people believe that conservatives rape and pillage the environment, but this is not the case. In fact, I would say that since most hunters probably lean to the right they would be the ones who want to protect the wilderness from abuse. The problem with the left is that they seem to see this in terms of absolutes when it really ought not be. There is a balance between man and the environment; there is no rule which says that the woodlands are “sacred” and cannot be cut down. If a village of people will go starving if they do not have lumbering jobs because of some prohibition, then it's time to take a look at the balance and apply our reason. It's also a problem when environmentalists will threaten the very balance of power in the world - including our own democracy - if they promote ways to "hit back" at industrialized nations because of what they perceive is a contributor to global warming. This issue in itself is larger than many might think.Â
Great, well maybe I'll have to visit the amusement park while I'm down there for a visit some time. I guess there's a creek toward the end of the property where they're moving to so I'll be able to set up the ol' fishing pole there while I tip my hat over my eyes and relax against a shady tree. At least this might be my plan until I get there and find there's a sewage treatment plant on the creek a mile or two upstream. 😮
I think Donnie's on to something. I also think that parents or teachers don't educate their charges enough about being respectful for certain things in life. Sure, they'll get plenty of lessons in politically correct behavior, but other things will go untaught. That said, I wonder if some of this is just kids being kids. I suppose I could find my answer if kids in other generations did similar things.

Ultimately the way I'd like it to piggy back on other sites is by creating various “feature” sites on historical topics at different domains. For example, I have my Great-Awakening.com site which directs people here if they want to discuss the GA. I have long been interested in developing other sites dedicated to topics which might not be discussed in length or very well in other sites. The way I had been planning on doing this was by researching a topic and writing a paper on it and then using the text as the basis for the site. Unfortunately (and I'm sure you know how it goes) you start getting involved in another direction of web development and pretty soon you're off in some other direction with web activities.
Well actually there's some fact inside all that fiction. There is evidence that a city once existed where Troy was supposed to be; many of the cities from the Iliad and Odyssey are real; and perhaps at least some of the events of the stories were based on real events. I think the mystery lies in finding out what is true and what is not.
I sent out an all-hands newsletter a week or two ago to remind people. Some of the earlier posters on here did post exchanges for me, so in that sense they're more like mercenaries and won't be back unless there's a quid pro quo.

Yeah, were we being taxed? That's odd…might be a “local” tax seeing how none of it's going to your beneficent emperor! 😮And I took the afro-dude out to try and mix it up a little. You really want him back?Â

That's pretty interesting stuff. I guess I didn't know or had forgotten about your grandfather's time there. Based on what you're saying here the Johnson's Island Prison would make for a good setting for a Civil War movie.
I find one of my great pet peeves in life is patronizing people. To his credit, he did apologize to me via pm for some of his comments the last time we clashed. That was cool. But I don't like the process of engaging in patronizing debate because I don't want to be insulted like that....and I don't want to feel the need to insult people back. Not all arguments are worthy of participating in, don't you think?
