I think Donald hit it right on. Lesser of two evils for a lot of people. But I would still have to lean towards Rome. Just a lot more there that interests me.
What? How can you say that? Are you saying that man regressed over the course of 1300 years? 🙂
Actually I figured that might ruffle some feathers, but I did it anyway. I think someone has called me on it before, he he.So I count 670+ on the "ship". I didn't know that they made military vessels that large back in the day!

That link doesn't work….here's a link:http://www.nbcnews.com/id/14486319/Must have been a desert oasis with waterfalls and all. The Persians must have known how to live it large!
This indeed is true. Here is what I found about the Japanese occupation of Attu and Kiska Islands from Wikipedia:
The islands had very little strategic value for either side, but control of the Aleutians would prevent a possible U.S. attack across the Northern pacific. Similarly, the U.S. feared that the islands would be used as bases from which to launch aerial assaults against the West Coast, and it became a matter of national pride to expel the first invaders to set foot on American soil since the War of 1812.
After you posted this I found it in my time life civil war set. They said it weighed 17,000 lbs and threw a shell that weighed 218 lbs 2 and a half miles using a charge of 20 lbs of gun powder.
You wonder what the accuracy with something like that would have been with a barrel that short. I know that later on - I think during World War I - the Germans developed a mortar with a super-long barrel that could fire a super long distance. Problem with this heavy artillery is that it can almost become a transportation nightmare. The fact that it was moved by a train speaks to this.
I enjoyed the Peloponnese quite a bit….very beautiful in fact, and it harkens back to the days of the mighty Sparta. One interesting town to visit is Naflion, which came under Venetian control perhaps during the Middle Ages when Venice controlled the Adriatic. Also in the Peloponnese is the city of Olympia, a quaint Greek town which served as the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games (summer, mind you – not the Winter Games!). Offering a bit of a contrast is Athens, a bustling concrete jungle which offers less in the way of authentic Greek culture (unless one considers conning/fraud to be "authentic"). Drive to the northern region and you'll discover the city of Delphi, an interesting village tucked away in the mountains which offers breathtaking views and one of the ancient world's most renowned centers of "prophecy".
From what I understand at the Japanese had also taken control over part of the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. I wonder if this is the only time part of the U.S. proper has been occupied by an enemy force since the British in the War of 1812.
I remember hearing the account of Peter Abelard being castrated after hearing about it back in college. I have read at least parts of his “Dialogue of a Philosopher with a Jew and a Christian”, and while I forget the content of the book, I remember being greatly impressed by it. I may have to pick it up again one of these days.
