I wonder what is preventing our defeat of the insurgents. I wonder how much the Iraqis themselves are at fault here….not individual Iraqis, but Iraqis as a whole. I think it's likely that there are groups of them who support the insurgents. Otherwise, how could people like Zarqawi have gone on for such a long time after the U.S. arrived? One thing - with the end of WWII, Germany saw a multitude of countries setting up shop there. The U.S., Great Britain, the Soviets, etc. That may have played a part in the average joe Nazi-supporter's decision not to oppose the quashing of Nazism. Although the coalition in Iraq is multi-national, I bet it is perceived to be a U.S. operation by average Iraqis.
Lol, I think we could have a parent page which presents options for a visitor: Religious History, Academic History, or Western Civilization History.Perhaps another thing to do would be to have a "topic" on my forum which actually directs visitors to the Religious History forum. In such a case, it might be better off to have the same forum theme throughout (with a similarly-themed logo) so that the visitor doesn't think he's visiting an altogether unrelated site. Good idea Donnie...let me think about this some more.
I think I had thought of doing that at one point or another…there's actually a way to do it with phpbb as well (look for “portal” mods). The problem is that I wouldn't have had enough content to merit a portal. I would have had to essentially create a whole site to complement the forum. But then I have to consider what I really want in my site….a complete site or just a discussion forum?
I think the Strategic Defense Initiative was supposed to eventually have a network of nuclear lasers that could sweep a descending field of nuclear warheads. It's plausible, but just now getting to be practical. Reagan was ahead of his time here.
What's a "nuclear laser"? Actually, wasn't SDI more like a missile response system (like we are building now) but based in space, rather than on earth?
I've never read that book by Umberto Eco. I've only seen the movie, “The Name of the Rose”, which was interesting in plot, even if it was somewhat “Hollywood”.
Glad you got that figured out. Did you also know that in your control panel you can turn on the Quick Reply function? And yeah your explanation sounds good. I would need to learn more about the role of religion in Greek society, as their many expenses and efforts were placed in temples and artwork. In my understanding the myths of the gods were developed to explain the origin of virtues, vices, morals, or perhaps other lessons in life. This brings up another question - how do you think the Greek myths developed? Would guys just be sitting around drinking one day and say, "Hey, how about this one - the kid gets off the island with wings made of feathers and wax!" It seems that there would have to be a conscious decision at one point or another to create these stories.
I'm not sure how to answer this one….but I'm amazed at your recollection of ST names from the old series… 🙂 Actually I agree about the technological advantage. At the same time, I believe the Phillistines were at an advantage over the Israelites when David slew Goliath. I think that they had the straight-edged sword, whereas the Israelites only had the inferior sickle-blade sword. Obviously, God's help of the Israelites changed the tide….
I think that you have a point, but perhaps not the overarching point. After all, if a legion of well-trained, disciplined Roman soldiers went into battle against a company of 1991 Iraqi regulars, who do you think would win?
Yeah from what I understand it got people to start thinking that they coudl also “win big” with personal injury suits. Unfortunately, I don't think that people win as much as they think they can. Insurance companies see to it that they don't win big.
This site is having trouble getting picked up in the major search engine, so I can't get the occasional visitor who could turn into a regular poster. My phpbb forum didn't have that problem. I agree that the phpbb community is much larger and there is more support and add ons. However, I think this is just because SMF is much newer; in time, it should grow quite a bit. As far as installation, though, I can't imagine that SMF is any more difficult than phpbb. At least you know that you can convert your phpbb forum into an SMF forum down the road if you ever wanted to. It's not that hard at all.
Donnie, thanks for your input. I know part of the reason why the site's having difficulty. To fix it, I may need to switch the forum back over to phpbb, even though I'd rather not. Hopefully there's a better solution.
In a sad modern-day story reminiscent of the Mary Celeste, a boat was recently found off the coast of Barbados which contained the bodies of 11 people who had died at sea and had been drifting for months. They began from Africa and were on their way to the Canary Islands, meaning they drifted all the way across the Atlantic. May the rest in peace.
