I didn't know that, either, so it's kind of interesting to read about. Makes me wonder how many visible signs of Spanish exploration are still extant in the East north of Florida (town names, rivers, etc.).
Well that has to rank among the sorriest reasons ever for famous artwork to have been destroyed. One would think that at the very least, they could have been used by the suspects as leverage to have a reduced sentence.
I know that there is much sculpture on some Gothic cathedrals which depicts really crude figures, which seems to be strange considering the buildings are places of worship. I'm still not entirely clear on the reason for these, but I'm sure someone, somewhere has looked into the matter. The relief you show looks like a guy/creature with a pot/oil can for a head.
I am thinking that states have enough resources that they could write the terms of the agreement in an enforceable contract. That makes it much harder to get around. As for your grandfather, I am guessing he didn't have the resources to protect his land, which is unfortunate. I hope that at the least the government compensated him for his loss. Does he still own the adjoining land (or is it still in your family)? When the government puts a road through land, that land obviously becomes more attractive to developers, hence raising the value.
Do they exist in real life with the kind of potential we see in fiction? What would the range of a single EMP have? Would it be the kind of thing where a small section of a large city might be knocked out, or where planes would be falling out of the sky?
