The sad thing about it is that the thing which should have been a bigger issue was the IRS-Tea Party scandal. That involved actual targeting of political opponents by the government, whereas the NSA scandal involved potential violation of privacy.
I agree with you 100% that the IRS scandal should have a higher priority than violations of privacy.
Yes, he did say that. He also said that faith is not required in this life to reach the Kingdom of God in the next. I don't recall anything in scripture that says that, but I could be wrong. I do remember reading something about man can only achieve salvation through Christ. That would seem to require faith in this life not “oops, I was wrong and now feel bad” when you are standing before the Man himself.
I found it amusing that the authors of the article did not include any of the founders when they mentioned notable Americans with English ancestry. I guess I did not expect them to given that it is an English paper.Realy illuminating map though.
I gathered from the article that the authors had the notion that Romans lived in shacks until they gained an empire and then suddenly started building on a grand scale. The idea itself strikes me as ludicrous. Everybody, everywhere, at every time has tried to showcase their wealth and power with the grandest construction they could build. The distinguisher is what materials they had to hand and their durability. I guarantee you there was some rich dude in ancient Sumer that built the biggest house he could afford to impress his visitors, why would Rome or Romans be any different?
Perhaps Western and Central Europe will secular enough that when threatened by the sword of Islam, they will convert rather than fight?
I foresee Europe Islamizing with a whimper instead of a bang as well. They stopped them at the Gates of Vienna in 1683 yet today they are inviting them in with open arms and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Liberal sensitivity, the Cult of Diversity at any cost, and PC thinking have gone too far. There is also the human propensity to miss the forest for the trees. Everybody knows at least one Muslim who has secularized and therefor thinks that all Muslims eventually will. I think they are mistaken there and those Muslims who have secularized will return to the fold eventually. Islam is like the Tar Baby in that respect.
Upcoming on my blog – Syria said Tuesday it has accepted Russia's proposal to place its chemical weapons under international control for subsequent dismantling: Let's see, John Kerry makes an off the cuff remark, Russia Jumps on it as a serious proposal, Russia then gets Assad to buy into it, and the US Administration is left tap-dancing trying to justify attacks whose raison d'etre has just disappeared. If the Syrian CBRN crisis has not showcased how inept and amateurish current US foreign policy is, I don't know what else could. Perhaps we should threaten to attack Venezuela over their recent power outages as causing unneeded human suffering. What gets me about this whole deal is there has not really been a discussion of interests. There has been a lot of talk about morality, international norms, a treaty Syria never signed, and of course the children. What there has been a decided lack of from the WH is a frank explanation of which US National Interest is threatened by Syria gassing their own people. I know it sounds callous to say it so bluntly but how do we have a dog in this fight? Assad is a jerk and the rebels are just as bad. Either way we end up helping someone who hates and that is never a good idea. I also fail to understand why the other ME governments are doing nothing, they have much more at stake in the war's outcome than we do. It is about time they stood up an took responsibility. The way I see it we have two things that would cause us to get involved. 1. A Syrian attack on Turkey, a NATO ally or 2. an attack on Israel. Other than that let them kill each other off.Lastly, Obama and his team are showing their *** in a spectacular way and proving to the world that the American people have elected an idiot not once, but twice. You should hear some of the analysis coming out of the European press. The days of Euro-liberals wetting their pants at the mention of his name are over. Between the NSA revelations and the fumbling of Syria Obama is not seen as the savior over here anymore. I actually think the NSA scandal hurt him more because it is a clear violation of things he promised to put a stop to before his first election.
I think legitimacy, like power, comes from strength. If we go to the UN we are surrendering some of our power. I also don't buy the collective agreement is better argument. Why would I think that the interests of any other nation necessarily coincide with mine? Collective agreement can be good at times but is not always necessary and never a requirement.
Don't hold your breath waiting for reciprocity in relations between confessions. I think the Muslims have chosen a third way and are infiltrating peacefully while letting demographics take it's inevitable course. They are much likely to defeat the West through birth rate than any other way. My big hope is that they push India a little bit too far. I don't think the majority Hindus take too kindly to Muslims anyway and are likely to do some some serious butt whupping if pushed.I don't see why forced repatriation is a bad idea. Most Muslims n European countries originally came as asylum seekers. Simply send them back, it really is that easy.Yes, the Hofbräuhaus is a big tourist trap, it is right across the Platzl from the Hard Rock Cafe and smack in the center of town. If you go there in the summer you have to be careful or you will get rampled. They make a great mushroom soup and the beer aint too shabby either although there are beers in my area that I think are better.
As time moves on I am getting more and more pessimistic that we can get past the current disharmony without some people tryig to refresh the Tree of Liberty. Heck, I am not so certain myself, that it is not time for a cleansing and refreshment of said tree.It seems to me that the intent of the founders has been lost or twisted so out of shape that the original intent and meaning of the Constitution has been forgotten or willfully ignored. This is not a rcent development either, this trend began with prgressivism itself in the early 1900's even before the rise of FDR.
Technically, GW did not have to go through the UN, he chose to in order to increase his perceived legitimacy. Obama can't go to the UNSC because both Russia and China have announced that they will veto any resolution authorizing a strike. What I find hilarious is that it was the folks on Obama's side of the fence who screamed that without the UN GW was in the wrong let they turn a blind eye when Obama does the same. If I recall corrrectly, there was no UN mandate for strikes in Libya in 2011 either.
