t you describe fits the bill as defined in Federalit #47. “The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, selfappointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.”The question then becomes what is the appropriate response to the gradual arrogation all power into the Executive that we have seen over the years and that has accelerated since 9/11 gave a convenient excuse to trample on civil liberties?
AFter further research we have to define what we are talking about when we say Martial Law. I don't necessarily think we are all talking about the same thing. I get the sense that when many people talk about the “president” imposing Martial Law they are talking about the executive gathering all power unto itself and acting as judge, legislative, and executive. What I would call an absolute monarch, some might call it a tyranny. In the end I think people are talking about all authority coming from the office of president with the Courts and Congress being ignored or rendered impotent. Am I right in thinking this kind of thing is what you guys have in mind whe you talk about Martial Law? FEMA and DHS cops in jackboots rounding people up and throwing them in camps for using the wrong words or not donating to the right charities or even expressing unnaproved political opinions. I think you guys are envisioning some 1984 type scenario when FEMA takes over.I found an interesting discussion on what Martial Law is and is not here at US Constitution.net
Doesn't a declaration of Martial Law require congressional assent after a given period of time? (I am not sure how long, I think 90 days) If I remember right it is in the War Powers Act, which every president since it's passage has held to be unconstitutional by the way.
I am not averse to the idea of limiting president's to one term. I still think eliminating the income tax would be a more productive and consequential thing to do though.
I guess I just have a different attitude than both of you. One, I always hated PT when I was in the army. I always said I would rather you take me down to the basement and beat me up for an hour than go running. Two, I just don't enjoy it.I guess I have reached that endpoint Phid. I am 5'11", 170 and happy with it. I can still toss 90 pound bags of cement around, hike all day with a 50 pound ruck, and do everything I need to on my car. I don't feel the need to go to the gym anymore. My wife still says and proves she is happy with the way I look and I managed to avoid the retiree gut that all guys seem to get shortly after retiring from the military and some get before. Plus, I have more mechanical problems than you can shake a stick at. Between bad knees, back, neck, shoulders, and arthritis in my hands I think I am doing pretty good for an old retired combat soldier. If you guys like going to the gym by all means, do so. It just aint my thing.
No, I like the two-term limit for president. Yeah, it stops good ones from staying in office but it also stops idiots from staying in office forever too.I would like to see the 16th Amendment repealed and the income tax eliminated though. That alon would fix many of the problems we have with government being so big and intrusive.
As a US Army Master Fitness Trainer I would tell you that the way to lose weight is diet and cardio not lifting which would tend to slim you but most fat loss will be offset by gain in muscle mass. My personal experience counseling soldiers with weight problems (fat boys) tells me that the most effective weight to lose weight is to eat normally and exercise, but do not exercise to excess.I have not changed my diet much since retiring. I do however, go walking with my wife and dog almost every night for roughly 30-45 minutes depending on the weather. I am far from a fitness nut. I have also weighed within 10 poounds of 170 for the past 25+ years except during my deployment when I lost weight both times.I don't look down on people who spend lots of time at the gym. I just wonder why they feel they have to do it. It seems to me that eating right and getting moderate exercise is all someone needs. Of course, that means stay away from faty snacks and processed foods as a general, though not unbreakable rule. The problem with people and weight is a lack of moderation and self-discipline.All that being said, I also counseled my people to do something they like as exercise because if they like it they tend to stay with it.
The Romans had running water. They used toilets that had a constant stream of running water below the seat. Running water did not reappear in widespread use in Europe until the 19th century. On another note, the city of Split is still partially supplied with water by the aqueduct Diocletion had built to supply his palace in the 4th Century. It was renovated in the 1800's and is still in use. You can see part of where it runs above ground as you drive out of the city.
That reminds of some of the stories from the 70's and 80's when the last IJA soldiers atrted coming out of the jungle in the Phillipines and other Pacific Islands.
Funny, yet a grain of wisdom in there. Why is it that Conservatives put forward women who are both smart and attractive while liberals seem able to find one or the other but not both in their female spokespeople as a general rule? I think it is because liberals have wedded themselves so closely to feminism that they have to deny that women can be both attractive and capable or their worldview fals apart.I once knew a guy who could make a great case that feminism is the single most destructive ideology to arise in the last 300 years. I don;t know if I believe him 100% but he made some very good points.
The castle was built in the late 17th century by the Venetians to defend the coastal plain against the Truks. There was zero information about the bathroom. The hole looks out over a 75-100 foot cliff. They actually did not not explain anything about the bathroom. I figured out what it was because the offal heap is still there. There were no facilties to rinse it out and I imagine they just squatted over the hole to do their business. The side of the mountain probably look every bit as nasty as you can imagine, the rock is still stained from the toilets use.It actually reminded me of a stone version of the wooden latrines we found in 1996 when we took over the Mt Vis defenses in Bosnia from the Serbs. The Serbs were shocked when the first thing we did was burn all their latrines and put burn-out latrines in place.
