That is a good question. I am guessing not all 750,000 pose the same threat, because if they do, then we've lost.
What is acceptable risk? is only 3 dead and several hundred wounded acceptable risk? I don't think any level of risk from known jihadis is acceptable, it is bad enough trying to find and stop the ones we don't know of. Known jihadis is a risk we can greatly lessen through deportation. If they are non-citizens then they have no rights of residency, especially if they espouse beliefs and sentiments contrary to freedom and our democratic traditions. They have a word for that you know, sedition.
Civ II is about as plausible as you can get given the computing limits of personal PC's. It tends to simplify many variables. That being said said, the game does a good job of rendering the limitless variables in real life into something tolerable. I don't know ho realistic it is though. The assumption remains that mankind will be stuck on the planet and I think that eventually we will start spreading to at least the rest of the solar system if not to other stars.
Then what was the point in getting your IT degree?
As a springboard for something nebulous and undetermined. 😀 I have to be honest here. IT does not excite me as much as I thought it would. I am seriously considering getting another history related degree and trying to make a go of writing. I just don't want to end up doing something I hate until I am 75 or 80 and can finally retire for good.
I used to play Civilization II. It is a really fun game. I have to admit that I got pretty repressive too, it was the best way to force maximum productivity out of my peeps. His original Reddit post is better reading than the HuffPo piece. I thought this quote was interesting:
The military stalemate is air tight. The post-late game in civ II is perfectly balanced because all remaining nations already have all the technologies so there is no advantage. And there are so many units at once on the map that you could lose 20 tank units and not have your lines dented because you have a constant stream moving to the front.
I would be willing to bet that every American would be shocked to know how many known jihadis are in the US that the FBI has lost track of. I heard on the radio today that there are 750,000 names on the terror watch list and even if every FBI were assigned to watching them that would mean each agent would have to monitor 21 people. I just wonder why we are not deporting people on the watch list or at least denying them entry to the country?
Yea!!! I am finally done with my next piece of Sheepskin. I just got my last grade from my capstone IT course. My BS in IT should be confirmed by email next week with a diploma following in the next month or so. I am now even smarter than before… at least in theory. ;D The next question is if I am going to go on and get another Master's or not. I have not decided. :-
Here are some updates about the bombers from WSJ. Apparently the Russians knew quite a bit and tried to warn us but the FBI placed a pretty low priority on the case. They are busy making up that lack now. I am really starting to wonder how many known jihadis there are in the country that we are not deporting because they have not “done” anything yet? Probably more than we would think.
I think you are right in that interest in WWII is no higher now than it was 20-30 years ago. I also think that Inglorious Bastards was more a reflection of the coarsening of public discourse than anything more profound.
Hollande has been in office for not quite a year yet, 15 May will be a year. I think what we are seeing in France is buyer's remorse. Maybe they didn't think he really meant it when he said how far left he was? I bet they wish they hadn't rejected Sarkozy about now huh?
I spend a large part of my time around Germans and I have not heard any of them talking about it. Yes, it is all over the media but I get the impression that is just hype. All those history channel shows have been getting shown over here too but they have their share of black helicopter type show too. I think I have had more people ask me about Roswell, Area 51, Afghanistan, Obama, and Iraq than want to talk about the Nazis. I get the sense that the biggest part of it is that they are losing a generation who never talked and now they want the remaining people to get their stories down so they are not completely lost.I definitely don't get the impression that they are fascinated by the Nazis, at least not any more so than Americans are.
Now that is interesting. I knew that aerial photography has enabled many old and ancient sites to be discovered. I find it cool that an amateur made the discovery. It is somewhat similar to what amateur astronomers do when they team up with professionals for sky surveys and such.
I will believe it when I see it. The French are just as cowed and compliant as most other Europeans, they will bow down and accept whatever the government throws at them with typical resignation. The Torch of Freedom burns only feebly in France and indeed the rest of Europe, the form of freedom satisfies them because they certainly do not have the reality. Most Europeans are content to only talk because they don't feel they can really achieve anything in the face of bureaucracy.
The developments in this case make for interesting reading. I heard a good comment today on the radio about how there was so much bad information put out about these events through social media. Social media makes the news cycle faster but also slightly more inaccurate.
