ParticipantNice try, but no cigar. 😀 Superior seamanship I might even buy. If I remember Nelson beat the French transatlantic time by a few days through better seamanship. But then seamanship is not technology that reinforces my point about the human factor doesn't it?

ParticipantWhat about naval technology? I think, except for a few exceptions, history shows that a superior ship or line of ships almost always win.
She was quoting you. So what do you really think? ???

ParticipantEconomics plays into it, and I might even go so far as to say that the vast majority of wars in history were fought for economic reasons if you really analyze them. But the essential question remains; does superior technology always mean victory? I continue to maintain that human capital is more important in war than any technological edge.

ParticipantI do not dislike archaeology. I think it is discipline that can teach us a lot. I just think that often archaeologists make claims they cannot support. Artifacts without context really tell us nothing and often they try to make out that a sword found in a field says more than it really does. We have learned a lot from some finds but from others all we have are guesses that we have no way to know if they are correct or not. Pompeii has told us a lot about how the Romans lived but does excavating a small 4,000 year old village in Iraq tell us as much without any type of documentary support such as we have for the lives of the Romans? I think not. I don't dismiss archaeology out of hand as does Donnie as being mere digging but I think their “discoveries” need to be viewed more critically than they are.

ParticipantI already have several Nigerian friends, most of them with terribly sad stories but they need my help to get a hold of millions. I have been getting a lot from Indonesia lately too. 😀

ParticipantIt does not surprise me. She is tough old lady. The British could do worse than give the monarchy a larger role in government than just being a figurehead. The next question is will the Obama admin. actually try the guy or will they work some deal with the Islamists to release him as they are reportedly doing with the Blind Sheikh and the Islamists.

ParticipantI hope I am not a spammer. 😀 As I increasingly realized there is almost no job market for historians outside of academia I decided to use my GI Bill and go back to school. To decide which degree to pursue I spent a few months reading the want ads and there are tons of unfilled IT jobs because of a lack of qualified people. So tada!, my new degree path. Once I get the BS I am seriously considering using the rest of my GI Bill to get an MS in Information Systems. Guys with a Masters easily command 6-figure salaries.

ParticipantThe classes are not boring but the sheer analytical thought involved in programmng gives me headaches. I am going to stick with it for the prospect of getting a 6 figure job though.

ParticipantThose in the know have been saying for years that we have forgotten the past lessons of counter-insurgency in our current wars.

ParticipantI wonder how many other sites like this there are waiting to be discovered? Probably many more than we would suspect.

ParticipantI find it amusing that the article mentions the site is not handicapped accessible. The site is historically significant, but so are hundreds of other sites that have not been preserved. I would not go out of my way to visit the place.
