Yes, but isn't he already a fad with all the t-shirts and stickers and whatnot? I always wondered who this Che guy is when I saw all these stickers on the telephone poles near Brown Univ. After I found out who he was and what he stood for and what he did, I was very perplexed how anyone could idolize such a person. :-I think the best way to sqelch his ideology, or at least remove his "hero" status, is through better education.
Wish I could remember who said this (and, I don't completely agree with it, but it makes sense): Who cares if they like us as long as they fear us.The peacemakers mentioned in the article (although not in the excerpt) are wrong, IMO, in that they are anti-American. That's the difference between what Petraeus is doing and those mentioned in the article. "They hate us because we did something and we need to figure out what we did to anger them". That's just not correct, and that's appeasement, not peacemaking. If "they" are mad at us for some reason, we need to show them that their reasons are wrong or untrue. In other words, we don't need to change, they do..but they must want to because it will work out better for them. Cutural awareness is necessary so we'll know what will work for them and what won't.
23 Oct 1983 – Beirut, Lebanon. A suicide bomber with the equivalent of 12,000 lbs of TNT detonated his explosives at the Marine barracks killing 241 American servicemen (220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and 3 Army soldiers). The 4-story building collapsed into rubble crushing many inside. 20 seconds later, another suicide bomber drove his truck into the underground of the French barracks, killing 58 French paratroopers. It has been said Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the attack. To this day, it is the deadliest single attack on Americans overseas since WWIIAnd thus it began.
Bad timing on the part of the House leadership. IMO, the genocide happened, it should be and has been acknowledged by most, but we need Turkey strategically, and our relations to the Arab world are improving, it's still very touchy. (isn' that what Democrats have been saying since 9-11? Yet they do this? 🙂Here's a short (well...not 80 pages long) commentary from CSIS.
"So long as the Arabs fight tribe against tribe, so long will they be a little people, a silly people - greedy, barbarous, and cruel, as you are." ...one of the lines from the movie (TEL), far too true of the world in general and that area in particular, eh?Wally
Yes. And Ali (Omar Shariff) sarcastically repeated the line after Lawrence successfully united the tribes against the Turks. Kind of similar to Al Anbar.Yes, Phid, the intermission was "interesting". Good thing the DVD noted the director just wanted the soundtrack with no picture or I would have thought it was broken. 🙂
You can't earn your salvation. It is given to you by God. You have nothing to do with it. Good works is how you can tell if you are actually saved. (that's what I believe anyway)
I don't disagree with you. There's an election coming up in Iran in 2009. Hopefully everyone will be patient enough to wait and see what happens. As far as economic sanctions, the ones suffering from those are the citizens of Iran.
It's crazy, but I'd like to see Baghdad (Babylon). Also Ur is supposed to be in Iraq too. That would be something to see, ancient (Genesis era) biblical ruins.
I think I'm taking the Western Civ classes. I and II fit the schedule and they will be interesting classes. I decided to go to school, so I have to work at it if I want this. I ain't no spring chicken, and don't want to take too long to get a degree. With every 16 week course, I'll take two 8 week courses. I'll save the 16 week Lit class for another time. I'll let you know how it's going when I get to the 300+ level courses. 😮
If it was one bomb, then maybe I would think it was an intelligence error. But when the torpedo boats came after the initial airstrikes and shot at and killed or injured our men in lifeboats (a violation of international law), it was no mistake. It was a war crime.
What does it matter if we all out attack the country or take out a limited number of targets. Its still an act of aggression that can only have one outcome. Escalation. What does that escalation lead to? Nothing good.
Well, it would matter a lot, IMO. One is an act of aggression (full scale bombing campaign or invasion) and one is an act of self-defense. However it's done, it needs to be done aggressively by following through. I don't think precision bombing will escalate into full scale war. If anything, it will will prevent a full war and promote regional stability. Iraq is a big key in all this...I wish people would realize that. :- We (the U.S) may not even have to take any miltary action against Iran at all.
