Well you guys probably know more about it than I do. It's been used in history numerous times. It is best decsribed as something that is a military, political, and economic solution all in one. It is very population and cultural centric. It is more psychological than physical.
I also have to ask how beneficial it is to consider the root causes of incidents
It's beneficial in this way. There is no way you can intelligently fight an enemy without knowing what makes him tick. Why does he fight? What's his motivation? Why all the hate? What's the culture like? How can we get them to think of their leader(s) as irrational beings? Not all the time, certainly not in the case of a Hitler, is this doable but IMO most of the time it is. We like to see a clear cut victory; millions of innocent Japanese civilians killed or major cities completely destroyed. Victory in COIN isn't so clear cut, but it's still victory. (with less people dead). For example if you break their will, then you won or if you intimidate then so much that they wouldn't dare carry out what they plan because they know the repercussions, that's victory as well.
All types of warfare can and do bring destruction, but isn't peace the ultimate goal of any (rational-based) military strategy or weapon? I say COIN mainly because it looks at the cause of situations. (why does Group A hate Group B? What can be done to bring both groups together) The trained local population would rather fight the enemy than be or join the enemy.
Counterinsurgency doctrineIt trains the local population to fight for themselves thereby minimizing our casualties. It also deals with the root of enemy ideology.Nearly all the posts were about what brings the most destruction. What about what brings the most peace?
Define spies. Are you talking about intelligence gatherers, infiltrators, counterespionage, psyops, analysts, anthropologists? I don't think anyone would ever know the answer, even those involved in it. Security clearance is only for what you are assigned. (unless it's NATO clearance). A Top Secret clearance does not give one access to everything that's classified. The number of people employed by CIA or NSA is not made public, nor should it be IMO.This is just my thoughts; I don't think a majority of CIA personnel know what NSA, FBI, State Dept,or military intelligence personnel are doing or where they are working. The IC shares data, but other than the respective directors, I seriously doubt they share how that data was attained and who attained it.
UUHHH....Phid, Jethro Tull is a band...I think you mean Clampett ;DThat was a great movie and a great performence by the entire cast. Also Max Baer wasnt the jerk they portryaed him as being in the movie either.
Uh, you caught me zoning. Right you are, Jed Clampett's son or grandson or whatever.
NephewAnd according to this entry in Wikipedia, his name was Jethro Bodine. You owe me $5, stumpfoot. 8)
Jethro Bodine is the correct name. (and wasn't gah-uh-la-lee for Gomer Pyle?)Cinderella Man was a pretty good movie. Saw it a while ago though, so don't remember much.
We can argue how much the Egyptians and the Mesopotamians gave us, so too the Indus Valley and ancient China... or not. I see them more as getting civilization, generally, organized... society working together beyond the hunter gather stage to urbanization: legal systems of one sort or another, written language and the like... they didn't however, give us the political institutions that are the hall mark of our western world.
Isn't this just a definition (and a good one at that) of civilization? Laws, organization, etc.
Thanks. I did do some searching and most of them mentioned North Africa as being part of Western Civ. (some even mentioned Western Civilization didn't start until Europe came into being). I always thought Africa would be considered more because of the European colonization that was happening throughout the whole continent. Can something that wasn't considered a part of WC before become part of it after this colonization occurs? So is it safe to say democracy is what starts (or identifies) Western ideology? And are you saying Muslims are not part of it? What would they be classified as? Near-eastern? Or is Islam pretty much all by itself?
Whoa!! That'll scare the neighbors. At first I thought it was steroids, but the article says it's a genetic disorder. Let's hope they don't breed it!Did you read some of the comments? Someone said (it appeared jokingly) that it's caused by global warming. ;D ;D ;D
Why the need of a diary though? It can still be historically accurate, just not with EXACT dates. (OK, so it happened on July 12th, not the 11th). There has to be more stuff like this out there. A Civil War Soldier's “blog” would be interesting.
