Classics, as far as thse of us who live in and benefit from Wesern Civilization, answers all or most of the whys we have about our culture. Laws, religion, education, warfare, politics are all included in the Classics. I would even go so far as to say Medieval studies are almost as important to learn.
Ever since I wrote a paper on the Ancient Olympics and learned how far they travelled to compete or watch, I was always amazed. I wonder if they ate along away or carried provisions with them. I wonder if inns were an actual business or if people just opened their homes to visitors either out of kindness or to make some money. This map is cool too because it gives sea distances and times. But I assume it's based on the ancient ships of the time.
Weird. Tried removing that #. It works here on my work computer, but not at home. Maybe it's time to update the browser.Anyway, this is really cool. even gives sea distance times. (BTW, to go from London to northern England, it takes 14 days)
I you ever heard of the apps Tango or Viber? Both have free voice and Viber has free voice and text as long as you're near an internet connection. I use it to text one of my friends because he has to pay for each one on his regular plan.
I only have one finger for them.Did anyone else see this picture (forgot what paper). It was in NYC, a picture of some Wall St guys who put a sign in their window that said something like "too bad you people won't work. We do and can afford to buy a lot of cool things" 😀
I'm officially obsessed with the Age of Discovery. I'm impressed by the early Portuguese explorers (the first ones to open the spice trade by sea). Vasco da Gama didn't take any crap from the Muslims. They didn't want to trade with the Europeans, so de Gama bombed them and took their merchant ships.Still mainly obsessed with the British though. I think I would have been a loyalist in the Revolutionary War. Good thing I wasn't around them otherwise I'd be living in Canada.
Well, I keep hearing how Jesus may or may not have been an historical figure, so I am applying the same method to Mohammed. He ascended into heaven from the Dome of the Rock? Really? I guess my faith is weak when it comes to Islam.
I just deleted about a dozen books from my Amazon wishlist and found epub versions of my Cambridge histories. Woohoo!!(still prefer reading an actual book though)
