ParticipantThat's interesting and surprising news. I didn't realize Germans were still paying that debt.

ParticipantReconstructions allow us too see historic buildings. There're too many structures that are now only pile of rubble or a sole hill. Reconstructions allow us to actually "touch" a history..

ParticipantHe claims this is how the Nazis controlled the Jews and that is where the US learned the technique.Β He would probably buy the Hess story too.
Nice. Some time ago there was a "conspiracy" theory that a grandfather of present Prime Minister is shown on a photo of SD officers from WWII (PM's grandfather was actually enlisted to Werhmaht). Nonsense but some guys for sure bought it. For me the guy on the photo was similar much more to Steve McQueen than the PM.

ParticipantI write that the slav peoples have to be grateful to bulgarians etc.
BULGARIANS ARE NOT NATIONALISTS! Bulgarian people is a very tolerate people.
Weird..........I noticed , the author forgot to add, the Bulgarians lost their native turkish language somewhere in VIII - X century AD. After they settled in Balkans. Since then, they speak Slavic language, which is pretty well understood by other south-Slavic nations and it's not immensely different from my native Polish language. The reason is they settled on south-slavic lands in Balkans. Slavs were farmers, Bulgars were nomads. Higher culture prevailed.

ParticipantIf that's addressed to me, I'm not arguing about American contribution to WWII.I'm just amused by black&white version of history everytime when I see it.You mentioned about Japan. It reminded me about an episode in our history which is one of many proofs that history of WWII is not black&white, good&evil etc. That episode is described in this book, which is unfortunately available only in Polish language version.http://www.overtee.pl/ksiazka/miedzy-warszawa-a-tokio-polsko-japonska-wspolpraca-wywiadowcza-1904-1944.htmlThe book is about partnership of intelligence between Poland and Japan in years 1904 - 1944.For those, who don't know, Russia was extremely dangerous neighbour both to Poland and Japan. Japan had a seat of antisoviet inteligence in Warsaw until 1928, when it was moved to Berlin. Polish and Japanese secret service were cooperating in matters concerning Russia. In 1939 Germany and Russia conquered Poland. In april 1940, Stalin had 22 768 of captured Polish officers and clerks killed. In 1941, Germany invaded Russia and so Soviets became friends with the Allies. When Japan invaded USA, Japan became enemy of the Allies. In 1943 when the truth about massacre of Polish officers has been revealed by Germans, it was immediately hidden from public opinion - we were all Allies πWho do you think we consider bigger enemy and barbarian bastard, Japan or Russia π ?I apologize for off-topic disscusion:)It's all because of rainy weather π

ParticipantTMHO As sordid as politics can be, this post was first dedicated to the people who gave their lives to free Europe. Nobody forced them. They did it. Americans, Australians, Canadians, Britons, Polish, ... and not only them: people from colonies and many other volunteers.
I see you like this sentence a lot in America πI don't want to be nosy but are you sure there weren't any draftees in US divisions which landed in Normandy?and British, Canadians, Poles and Australians were forced to fight in that war much earlier, by two guys with moustaches π
When the emotions have died down, which will probably take another century or two, I think that it will not be seen as quite the pure good versus evil struggle that we have all been brought up to believe.
I agree π

ParticipantOur country was indeed founded on general Judeo-Christian (biblical) principles along with influences by Locke and others, but never a dogmatic theocracy.
I was taught that trisection of power was "invented" by J.J Rousseau π and your guys implemented it to your system.

ParticipantPeople want to forget for nationalistic and/or political reasons.Β We saved Western Europe from Nazi conquest and immediately after through the Marshall Plan, which stopped communists from winning elections in Italy and France, and NATO, which prevented Western Europe from a Soviet rollover.
Well, I know that πThank you for saving THAT half of Europe π

ParticipantDid you just claim that China and North Korea are pious countries?Β Both are secular communist dictatorships that actively persecute people of religious belief.Β Why would you even think they are very religious countries?Β I will give you Iran; you are spot on there, though some would argue that Islam is not so much a religion as a political ideology masquerading as a religion.
That was irony, man.

ParticipantYou're right about industry. American industry won the war and made Soviets reached Berlin. But American troops that landed in Normandy did not save the world. They just saved France, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Luxemburg and half of Germany from being liberated by Iosef Stalin. That day, 6th June 1944, Soviet troops were already within my country's pre-war borders and were just about to launch "Bagration".American troops literally did not save the world and that was my point.
