ParticipantI watched Gods and Generals before I read a Jackson Biography and thought they had over emphasized his religious habits, I was wrong, he really was that zealous for his beliefs.

ParticipantWhat rot. Do you not think that Hess's own family would not have been able to recognize a fake when they visited him in Spandau prison after the war. What reason would the family have to lie once the war had finished?
If they new he was free they would easily have been convinced to pretend that the fake was really Hess, therefore helping the real one too escape. But in reallity I'm sure it was him. According to the Conspiracy theorists, no one ever dies and nothing is as it seems.

ParticipantMost of the generals had no interest in protecting slavery as an institution. Lee is a prime example as is Jackson. They fought to protect their homes, there families and their friends.

ParticipantWell I used to make it my thing to be well versed in every time period imaginable. Since I grad school, I have become more and more specialized in U.S. history and have gotten away from my first love of ancient history and the Middle Ages. I used to love reading about Thomas Aquinas and his war against Averroes and Avicenna, and stuff like that, but golly I'm losing it. I used to know everything about Ancient Greece, Mythology, Church History, Islamic History etc....but now, I guess I've gotten lazy and if you don't use it, you lose it.
Thats my problem. U.S. history is my first interest, so the dark ages fell by the wayside a long time ago.

ParticipantDecember 20,1860 : South Carolina secedes from the UnionSouth Carolina officially leaves the United States when a convention ratifies an article of secession. South Carolina, the first state to secede, was followed within a few weeks by six other states, who collectively formed the Confederate States of America. When hostilities erupted in April 1861, four more states joined the Confederacy. Also on this day Elvis Presley was drafted in to the U.S.Army. 😀

ParticipantA new westen started filming called Seraphim Falls staring Peirce Brosnan and Liam Neeson. Brosnan plays a Colonel in the union army who after the civil war starts out on a journey to kill Neeson, who I guessed killed his wife. Can anyone say Outlaw Josey Wales?

ParticipantI take everything I hear with a grain of salt when it comes to the middle east. My entire life it has been violent, unsettled, and at war somewhere and with someone. I dont see this lasting. Nothing over there ever does except unrest.

ParticipantGood point. I find a lot of their conclusions to be grasping at straws. It seems they always want to change history.

ParticipantHow can one's economy be flourishing when there is so much violence and foriegn occupation?

ParticipantIt's a fact that many holiday traditions (not just Christmas) have their roots in pagen traditions, and I was wondering how a church of any kind could promote those traditions knowing there not Christian.
