ParticipantActually it was John Adams who went. It's kind of funny when you read about it, they were kind of like the odd couple.

ParticipantMy father had 6 months from his last time in combat until he was back in a civilian environment and he was welcomed as a hero and the government treated him with respect.? It was 3 DAYS from my last firefight until I got off a plane in Oakland and I was greeted with fear and suspicion and the government ignored me.?
I am interested in getting an opinion from someone who experienced what you did. What was the difference between the war your father fought and the one you fought that brought about such a different reaction from the american people and the government as well. Was it the different kind of wars or a differnt kind of country that you came home to? I was five when Saigon fell and With my own father, who died when I was three, having been there as well, it's something that has always made me wonder.

ParticipantI have read more than once that Sam Adams was the great propagandist and not above a little manipulation as well.

Participant? The bottom line is that powerful people have a very difficult time admitting when they're wrong and powerful countries are no different.
And things like that never change.

Participant? But I will say that the ads to build your own atom bomb shelter were much more effective than some government schmuck advising us to buy duct tape and plastic.
Tanamount to the old getting under your desk routine in case of a nuclear detination in your neighborhood.

ParticipantUnfortunately they would have had to arrest most of the military high command.?
True. And the more unfortunate fact about situations like that, an officer who makes those kinds of decisions rarely does it of his own accord.

ParticipantPickett never spoke to him after the war if I remember correctly while Grant's respected him.
Pickett never fully recovered from that battle and it was Lee's arrogance that caused it.

ParticipantHis goal was to re-unite the country, that was his goal from the moment they seceded.? Everything he did was for that, and only that, purpose.?
Yes his ultimate goal was for the reunification of the country, and he used the EP for that purpose, and the purpose was to undermine the southern confederacy anyway he could.

ParticipantI just of another, remember Mel Gibsons 'We Were Soldiers'? I thought that it was alright.

ParticipantWhat about Band of Brothers? I guess that would be more of a mini series than a movie. I have never seen it all the way through, just snippets here and there and it looked interesting.

ParticipantThere is a help link at the top of the main page (actually I think it goes with you to all the pages.) that covers some of the basics.

ParticipantI really like the logo, it really dresses things up nicely. How did you go about designing it?

ParticipantCuster got his rear kicked at Little Big Horn because he was a glory seeking idiot.? He was under orders to more or less escort the natives out of the country but he was trying to recapture the glory that he had deservedly won in the Civil War for his daring cavalry actions.? He also had experienced the joy of murdering natives in their bed at the Washita River not too long before so this was his big chance to relive the fun and recapture the glory.? He obviosly didn't know what he was getting into since he split his command into two or three sections, which means he didn't reconnoiter. Big mistake!!? Instead of a small village of 200-300 mostly women and children he ran into a village of some 1000 units consisting of close to a thousand warriors, if I remember the one native account I read years ago.? It also seems that once they found out that the infamous "Yellow Hair" was trapped they went into a frenzy because each warrior wanted to be the one the kill him and take his scalp as the ultimate trophy.? Unfortunately, again if I remember correctly, he had cropped his hair because of a scalp infection.? Any, Custer died of one of the major examples of military hubris in American history.? Simply put, the guy was a moron and paid the price.? Unfortunately he took some 276 victims with him.
Tell us how you really feel about Custer 😀Just kidding. You hit it dead on. I think after Washita he should have been arrested and hanged.

ParticipantReally thats what I was getting at. Look a Bin Laden, he's a terrorist, if he suddenly quit blowing people up and started robbing banks, I dont think people would stop calling him a terrorist. And thats my point with the James boys, they started out politicallly motivated, as many did because of the war, and then changed. I was just thinking of it because of how the term Terrorist is thrown around these days, wondering if maybe the definition had evolved since 9-11.

ParticipantGrant's experiments that led to the slaughter at the Battle of the Crater
What a horrible disaster that was.
