ParticipantThat is particularly interesting because I did not even know that Israel had nuclear capability back then (or even now for that matter).? How did Israel get that knowledge back then?
Good question, you never hear their name mentioned with all the other nuclear capable nations.

ParticipantHow was he perceived during his life?? Abraham Lincoln?? Interesting questions to figure out.
Lincoln was not well liked in the north or south. The only reason he was elected at all, especielly the second time was because the democrats kept splitting on who they wanted to run against him. Many called him the 'great ape'.

ParticipantNo Reconstruction was necessary, but it was mismanaged, and the South managed to wreck it with Jim Crow.? It wasn't until the TVA was launched did the South actually "recover" to where it could compete regionally again.
The south was in a shambles, physically and economically. They needed Reconstruction but didnt want it. What do you think were some of the bad decisions made by the federal gov. regarding the managment of reconstructing the south?

ParticipantWhat about Woodrow Wilson? Wilson totally mishandled foreign policy. He had the Congress declare war, when the army was totally unprepared to fight. No planes, no machine guns, no artillery!Every weapon of some quantity was obsolete, except the Springfield '03, of which there were severe shortages.

ParticipantWow, I didnt know that. I was three when that happened.

ParticipantAs much as they may have been "trained" in socialism, I don't think it worked.? Right after the fall of the USSR or the repeal of anti-capitalist regulations, individual retail stores began popping up.? The free market emerged on its own when it was allowed to in Russia, free from governmental control.
We're all the same; we all want our Big Macs and dvd players 😀

ParticipantThat was interesting. I'm not sure what it's all about, but I'm no computer genius either.

ParticipantJuly 27 1953 After three years of a bloody and frustrating war, the United States, the People's Republic of China, North Korea, and South Korea agree to an armistice, bringing the Korean War to an end. The armistice ended America's first experiment with the Cold War concept of “limited war.”

ParticipantI think I like the U.S. History catagories the way they are.

ParticipantJohn Pemberton's decision to defend Vicksburg rather than uniting with Joe Johnston's forces in the interior.? I doubt the outcome would have been altered in the Western Theater, but Grant would have been tied down to defending the area rather than besieging 22,000 Confederates.? Meanwhile the rebels could have held out quite a bit longer in Mississippi with the Army of Tennessee at its full strength.
Thats a good one. Also think about the fact that Grant would not have had his glorious victory and maybe would not have been propelled to the eastern theater. at least not when he was.

ParticipantThe last surviving union general, Adelbert Ames died in 1933 at the age of 97. He also was a participant in the shoot out with the James gand in the Northfield Minnisota raid.

ParticipantAre you referring to the Mark Twain book about her?
I've never read Twains book about Joan of Arc, what do you think of it?

ParticipantYou know I was thinking maybe we should start a 'Today in history' thread in each catagory (as the info becomes available) then the members could add bits to each one. The last couple of posts could be moved over to the WWII thread under 'Today in history'.
