ParticipantYes, the decline as a result of warfare AND overpopulation are kind of conflicting reasons.

ParticipantI just saw that this site was being crawled by "linkiewinkie".? On http://www.linkiewinkie.com it claims that it's some sort of "social experiment", whatever that is.? Let's hope it's for the good.
Was it?

ParticipantI wonder if people ever think that the effects laid on the South are still present today.? Hurricane Katrina showed the world the poverty of New Orleans, and we know that places like Mississippi are rather poor.? ?Are these leftovers from Reconstruction, or are they simply places where other factors have kept or led them into the bad side of life?
I think your right. It wasnt until the 1960's that the civil rights movement really gained momentum. Many in the south clung to the old old ways of hatred and bigotry. Look at the Jim crow laws that came into effect right after the civil War. It took a long time for the south to change, they resented The reconstruction policys and just wished the north would stay out of their business, still do to a certain extent, They dont call it the Civil War, they call it the war of northern aggresion. I think that says a lot about their thoughts on the war and it's aftermath.

Participant? Jesse James may have robbed banks, but he didn't randomly kill people.? The aspects unique to terrorism include high profile action for great effect, mass killings without discriminating between victims, and with motivation to make a political or social point.? If you can find an episode like this before, say, 1900, you can find your parallel.
Actually Jesse James did randomly kill. (I'll allaberate Later on that) But would you say that William Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson could be considered terrorists? Both sides denounced there activities during the war. Quantrill (and both James boys were present and participated) Pulled a group of soldiers of a train in Missouri and executed them all. terrorist act? Or act of war? And what of Lawerance Kansas?I remember once I was called to jury duty and the charge brought up on the man was making terrorist threats (he had said he was going to kick the guys butt.) This was about 94 long before 9/11. So do we use the term to loosley now?

ParticipantI dont agree with that. Maybes it's my greed for all that is historical, but I know there is a museum somewhere, someplace that would be glad to have the artifacts and a lot of people who would love to see them.

ParticipantDoes the forum software limit the number of different catagories you can use? Maybe Hobilar can be more specific as to what he is looking for. I think it's better to keep things seperated so posts can be more specific to their subject matter, but thats my own personal taste.

ParticipantOld photos of cities are very interesting. But pictures of people famous or not it doesnt matter. I guess it makes everything real.

ParticipantI agree with all your reasons. But for me it's alot of times about the people. What were they thinking and why? How did they feel? What were there reactions? Sometimes I will stare a long time at old photos trying to figure out the people staring back from another time and place, a time they lived through and one I can only read about.

ParticipantStonewall was a strange one, but it seems all the good ones are to a certain extent.

Participant? ? ? The mud and shelling were not the only danger to the men in the trenches. As can be imagined these insanitary places were a breeding ground for all sorts of infestations and vermin. Lice, frogs, beetles, slugs, and worst of all the rats.? ? ?
Rats, fleas, lice and all other such critters- the bane of soldiers for untold centuries. Interesting fact about the rats disappearing before the shelling.

ParticipantSemantic here, semantics.? What you say is true.? However, what I may have meant, and can argue now, was that George III was foreign to the concerns of the Colonists.? The pond was not the only thing that divided England and the Colonies.
Thus the war.

ParticipantApocalypse Now.....is a Vietnam War flick.? We should start another thread about Vietnam War movies, since there are many good ones.
As soon as I hit the post button I said; thats Vietnam, oh well I'll edit later, never did.

ParticipantYou wonder what it would have been like if there were paparazzi around back then.
A sharp increase in public executions?

ParticipantI wouldnt say it was my absolute favorite But I liked casualties of war with Micheal J Fox and Sean Penn. Apocalypse now is another. What do you think of the rash of 'going back for the p.o.w.' movies in the 80's, stallone and Norris heading the list.
