Oregon used to (perhaps still does) have a workfare program that was designed to get people trained up and into jobs. It had many strong points but one big weakness… so many were second or third generation recipients with no work ethic. In an NPR interview I heard, years ago, on trainer had to supply and teach the use of an alarm clock to an adult! While some of the homeless today have mental or physical limitations that would make them, potentially, less able to benefit from such a program (my community has a % that when interviewed on TV News indicated they are homeless by choice) many are victims of the economic times and just need a hand. If the help is given correctly, they and society benefit.Too bad we can't find that middle ground rather than the one size fits all that perpetuates the current handouts to the professional recipients.
Could be to save the gov't a blackeye (no pun intended)… might just prove how intrusive they can be if they chose, regardless of how innocent the subject may be. :-
Just spent a few minutes checking a couple of texts I used to use ( one world and one US) plus one of the US books I should have pushed for last adoption. All three are pretty smearless; Chris is portrayed as having above average smarts and seafaring ability (except that he went to the grave still thinking he made Asia)… the Columbian Exchange is connected as the prize for his voyages (connecting the new and old worlds). In all not much to bag here.I agree though, that many people do bag C2. 'nother case of Monday morning quarterbacking if one were to ask me. 8)PS: At least he didn't end up like the Vivaldi Bros. ;D
.... She claimed that using BC & AD was discriminatory against non-christian readers of my work and that is why she insisted on using BCE & CE. I called hogwash.
Press cannot be impartial anymore since they must sell news rather than report. All based on what extra dirt can be provided. Not about the facts but where a slanted interp of same may take us. So too why aren't some of the facts being reported? Witness the business about the various Czars Obama is setting up? (Yes Bush had them too but not so many and not so controversial).
Gore Vidal's a Leftist fool. His writing is just a reflection of the rest of the Left (extreme and moderate...if there is such a thing as moderate Left) losing faith in Obama. One good thing, you know it must be getting bad when even they are starting to complain about him and see him for what he is...an inexperienced hack.
Anytime there is growth / change within an institution there will be negatives… lots of offshoot churches formed and much hostility between folks over same but not of a magnitude that made it negative (overall) compared to how much it helped the revolutionary fervor to grow.
This all gets back to the idea of stereotyping and bias issues. Both are considered negative (and usually are) but are mostly a lazy way out; just accept the conventional wisdom on the issue without having to challenge yourself to find out the real answer. It is far easier to say that when someone disagrees with the Prez it's because of his skin color (which he has no control over) and is therefore a racist... than when one disagrees because his ideas are bunk (which he has control over) that the Prez might have crappy ideas. Many people don't get it; it's okay not to like someone or something... one just has to have a legit reason. It has to be something they can control.
