Interesting that Mazzini rallied Young Italy with the three R's of Rome's greatness: The Roman Republic, the Roman Church, and the Renaissance. Seems like the Church was coming into its own before the fall, no? Edict of Milan 313 vs The Fall based on various dates (early as 378 to the traditional 476)… I do agree that the abuse of folks isn't very Christian in the higher sense.I still maintain it's more about not giving the people what they thought they needed; gets to the generic cause of all revolutions and revolts. Rather I think that they thought (and promoted by the 1st Amend.) freedom of (and from) religion would trump any intolerance that might brew otherwise. They came from a rather intolerant background and saw the results.

Having bet the ranch, so to speak, on Israel as most likely ally in the ME (and a very rich and powerful lobby at home) it was in the best interest of the gov't to sit on this one it seems. I'm not a conspiracy theorist (much!  ;D) but this appears to be another of the times we are mushrooms (kept in the dark and fed road apples) for whatever reason.I love my country but fear my government.

He must have had a fairly large business portfolio.  I remember that he owned a casino in Lake Charles, Louisiana for a while.  It was later sold to Harrah's, eventually to be destroyed during Hurricane Rita.  I don't recall the name when he owned it.

Other than Jeopardy and Wheel he only had Dance Fever that ended up in multi-year run (1979-87), I think the big deal was selling out to Coca-Cola for $250 mil and retaining copyright to the shows.  :oAdd to that the fact he kept active in several businesses and yes he had quite a portfolio.

I have no idea how those Polynesians supposedly sailed across open ocean to South America.  If they could do it, you'd think they also would have built structures in Chile that we could find remnants of today.  According to that article Polynesians were in Chile in the Middle Ages….recent enough that you'd think we could find traces of their settlements there, if they had any.

Ah… a (pre-Columbus day) Sunday morning stroll through the archieves… the Polynesian chicken is more likely a Chinese chicken according to Menzies in 1421….And how about the Kensington Stone; looking more like it might be the real deal?

7-Oct-1763: Geo. III assures the security of the colonies in North America when he issues the Proclaimation of 1763; banning the private purchase of land beyond the Appalachian Mountains, it also forbade colonial expansion (private or public) beyond the mountains, with the intent of creating a Royal monoply on the area. Seemingly a good idea at the time as it would allow for an organized expansion under direction of the Crown. Thus begins the upset with the Crown that will lead to the Revolution. Given that there were settlements beyond the mountains already and much land speculation as well, George was trying to close the barn door after the horse had escaped; the 10,000 or so troops that would protect the colonies' boundary weren't such a good idea either. The slippery slide into revolt is begun!

More… though not much. Read the post and am in agreement, thank you for fleshing out the ideas that are the basis of my post.As far as the GA happening during the Age of Reason remember that there was some lag time for things to get from Europe to the colonies, travel being what it was.As far as the French Rev goes it was, IMHO, a true revolution. It inverted the social order and reestablished a completely different set up. But in as much as Nappy came to power was wasted; 10 years of chaos to get rid of one tyrant to install another.Ours was an evolution, if you will (with components of a civil war). My logic is that most of the same folks we the movers and shakers before, during, and after the (so-called) revolution; add that the gov't they establish is a rehash of the one they just fought off. Okay, we wrote down our Constitution and rather than trust the accidents of birth to give us a leader we elect guys to elect one. A vast over-simplification but you get my drift here. It's not so much new as a new spin.

No argument here… will add it my material later but I think we are basically going the same direction on this. I will plead guilty to oversimplification (often) as I teach history in middle school (nee HS) and there is only so much the students can grasp at that age. So too, at that age and considering that the material needs to be (almost) reduced to the infamous sound bite ala media news  :(More later….Wallyspelling edits

Wally, they're not crazies, we just never made the effort to understand their culture. We immediately and falsely label them as the bad guys.

Understood; this is a point I saw made in the essay (now lost) about why we need to study history. Just that missing this point is nuts.

Very nicely summed up! When survival is the main issue we aren't going to get very innovative; things smooth out and things can then improve.
